Questions About Pilates

What is pilates?

Pilates is a (normally) low impact form of exercise either practiced on the mat or on specific pilates equipment that uses the assistance and resistance of spring tension to help assist in movement.

Is pilates good for me?

The short answer is YES! Although, if you have recently had a surgery or serious injury please consult your doctor and/or your physical therapist before contacting Pilates by Ness. Pilates is generally appropriate for any level of mover and everyone is welcome in our studio.

What are the benefits of pilates?

You will see many benefits from your pilates practice but consistency is key. If you practice on a regular basis you can guarantee that you will notice a difference in your posture, strength, flexibility, balance, endurance and many more.

What is the difference between yoga and pilates?

Pilates and yoga are often misconceived by most to be the same thing. Although they are both practiced on the mat they are very different. We think they are best practiced together to make a beautiful cocktail. Yoga is 5,000 years old when pilates (contrology) just came about in the 1920’s, Joseph Pilates created some of his exercises based on his study of yoga therefore they may seem similar. Pilates then involved the use of machines consisting of springs and pulleys to help assist physical movement. Try both movement practices and see for yourself!

Will pilates help me lose weight?

This is a question that we get pretty often in the pilates world. Pilates is not normally a cardiovascular type of workout therefore it wouldn’t be our first recommendation for weight loss. However, pilates helps increase total body health and wellness and with that usually comes weight loss. We will do our best to help you reach your goals and when something is out of our scope of practice and we will refer you to our favorite nutritionists and dietitians.
