Pilates Methods

Learn about the unique methods of pilates offered at Pilates by Ness and see which is right for you

“Pilates is a system of exercises using special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, posture, and enhance mental awareness.”
-Joseph Pilates

The Pilates Method was created by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates and was originally referred to as ‘Contrology.’ Contrology related to the use of the mind to control muscles, focusing attention on core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and provide support for the spine. What does this mean for you and your practice at Pilates by Ness? It means we offer various different types of pilates methods that will be sure to fit your needs. Are you experiencing mild to severe lower back pain or perhaps suffering from a disc injury? Maybe you’re training for a marathon or one of Colorado’s famous bike races. Maybe you would like to comfortably walk around Denver’s art district without any pain or fatigue! Whatever the case, you will find exactly the right type of session that fits your needs right here at our studio in Denver’s Golden Triangle.

Rehabilitation Pilates

Are you suffering from an injury and/or experiencing pain? Have you had surgery and wondering what’s next after physical therapy? Rest assured, you are NOT alone and we are here to help! The US health department reports that on average, there are about 8.6 million injuries reported per year...let that sink in for a minute. If you fall into this vast category then rehabilitative pilates may be the right path for you to take. Injuries can be a huge inconvenience to the activities that you love and especially to your everyday life. Pilates comes highly recommended by most physical therapists and can be a huge aid in your road to recovery. With a training and background centered around rehabilitation, you can safely place your trust with any and all of our instructors.

Pilates for Seniors

One of the most wondrous things about what we offer is that it is available to anyone and everyone at any age! Our senior method that we offer is available for those individuals of around 60 and up. This type of practice will help remind you that you can continue to do the activities you love and that your age is just a number. Your sessions will be a delightful combination of low impact, slower and more mindful movements throughout class with a large emphasis on functional movement. Think sit to stand, reaching to the highest shelf at the grocery store, balance to prevent unwanted falls, and many more necessary daily activities. You are guaranteed to feel like the “best you” at any age with regular practice of this type of exercise.

Pilates for Men

A favorite pilates method at our studio is teaching to the male population! Many of whom think that it was created solely for women are quickly shown the benefits of this practice. We welcome everyone in our Golden Triangle studio and it is especially exciting for us when the male population takes interest in a rather female dominated industry. A regular practice for men can help you heal from an injury, create more flexibility and improve posture, build muscle tone, increase performance and even access and strengthen some of those harder to reach muscles you may neglect in weightlifting or other types of fitness.

Pilates for Women

Being a woman is hard work, as women progress through life their bodies take on all sorts of challenges and go through extreme changes. Regular practice is amazing for all of the reasons mentioned above plus many more. Strengthening your overall body to help maintain healthy joints and muscles, increasing flexibility and improving posture, and increasing pelvic floor awareness and strength are a few of the countless benefits that pilates can contribute to women's health.

Prenatal Pilates

Let’s face it, pregnancy is tough on women's bodies and childbirth can go any which way regardless of what the birth plan may have been. You then have a little bundle of joy who needs your constant attention leaving you with very little time for self care...or sleep for that matter. The post-natal pilates method can be extremely beneficial to your recovery process. We promise to help you regain strength and mobility while creating movements in ways that are appropriate for your body after birth.

Mat Pilates

Before any of the equipment was created, Joseph created a repertoire of mat exercises to strengthen his own body and eventually shared his creations with others. This pilates method is the most versatile because it can be practiced literally anywhere. If virtual sessions are your thing then you will likely be taking to a practice on your mat. Mat work is great for any level of mover, beginner to advanced and can be modified or progressed with the use of props and instruction from your teacher to fit any need.

Many of these pilates methods may resonate with you and that’s perfect. Your session will be a combination of every method your body needs! It also may change and evolve overtime as you become a more advanced mover. Remember, healing is not linear so be patient with yourself...half of the battle is won by simply scheduling that first session!
