Pilates OOV

One of the latest AND greatest tools to be introduced to the Pilates industry is the incredibly innovative OOV apparatus. At first glance, the prop is rather strange-looking but it is likely the coolest thing to enter the Pilates world since sliced bread. Its strange shape and patented materials are what make it so unique. With a slim neck and stout base, it provides the ultimate environment to support yet challenge the body in all planes of movement. To the naked eye, the Pilates OOV seems so simple but it has quickly become one of the most effective tools in the industry. Expect to use this piece of Pilates Equipment in almost every session at Pilates by Ness.

The Pilates OOV is made out of a honeycomb-like material and surrounded by a soft plastic-like outer shell. These materials make for a much more comfortable tool to use rather than something like a foam roller. The material is also unique because, unlike any other Pilates tool, it compresses to 50% and then pushes back! Foam rollers don’t compress at all and most balls only compress. Think of the feedback this will create while you create movements! It is also designed to be an unstable surface but its cradling-like curve allows you to stay in your ‘neutral spine’. We often refer to a neutral spine in Pilates, meaning the most optimal curvature for your spine and pelvis. While you lay on your back with your spine nestled in the gentle curvature of the Pilates OOV it places you in a slight inversion with your pelvis sitting just above your heart allowing the lower back to decompress. At the top of the Pilates OOV, there are cutouts for your shoulder blades so that they can freely move while you lay down, this is very unique to the OOV as you cannot create this type of movement while lying on a mat or a foam roller. You can use this prop in many different positions whether you’re on your back, your side, your stomach, seated, and kneeling. It can also be coupled with other pieces of equipment to add a greater stability challenge.

Benefits from using the Pilates OOV

At our studio, The Pilates OOV is referred to as the “prop of truth” because it is impossible to ‘cheat’ on it. Not in a sense where you are intentionally cheating but rather in the sense of compensation. It activates the core stabilizers while also gently lengthening the spine to help promote healthy blood flow and decompression while laying supine. You will also see a great improvement in your rotational stability, an important function in daily activities. We also have the option of adding load (weights) to the movements practiced on this apparatus, as well as the use of bands and balls. These different types of props can have multiple purposes whether it’s assisting in creating a movement or making the movement more challenging. Movements are practiced at a slow-motion almost meditative-like speed to help promote motor control and deep diaphragmatic breathing.
